Running reports in the background

I have a report that is taking longer and longer to run due to more and more data. The report has a few queries it is using to retrieve the data. It is possible that this report could be written more efficiently, but I don't think it would change that dramatically, due to the amount of data they need on the report. The report is an on-demand report being run from a form. The user supplies selection criteria on the form which is fed to the report. I was wondering if there is a way to change this report to run in the background, not interactively, so it won't tie up the user's session waiting for the report to finish.

Any help would be greatly appreciated
