Running Virus Scan in Word 2003

I just installed Word 2003 and when it launches it displays 'Running Virus
Scan'. I have searched the message boards and Internet and all the solutions
basically say the same thing.

Disable the Norton Office Plug-in.

We aren't running Norton Anti-Virus. We are running Symantec's virus
protection. Version 9.0.0.338. All the controls are set on the server side,
not the client side. I can't locate any setting that resemble an Office
Plug-in.

I have found a word around that is OK. Start Word with a /a which bypasses
all the plug-ins. This is a solution that I can live with for a time.
However, I do have some plug-ins that I would want to load automatically.
Adobe PDF for one.

Does anyone have any other suggestions as to how to get around this problem?

Symantec and Norton are the same company. Symantec Corporate
Edition is a volume-license product, so you should be able to get
help for this problem from your company's computer support staff.
If you had an older version of Norton Antivirus installed on
the computer before you got Symantec Corporate Edition, then the
Office Plugin from the older version could still be registered in
Windows even if you have uninstalled the older version. Use My
Computer or Windows Explorer to search for a file named
OFFICEAV.DLL on your hard drive (be sure to include system and
hidden files/folders in your search options). If you find it,
note the folder where it is located, and use the "regsvr32 /u"
method described in http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=329820
"How to use Office programs with the Norton AntiVirus Office
plug-in" to unregister the DLL.

As always your response was quick and included needed details.

However, the officeav.dll file was not on my computer. We haven't ever
installed Norton AV and even if we had, I rebuilt my computer about 3 months
ago and I didn't install it when reinstalling all my apps.

Do you have any other suggestions?

Did you include hidden and system files and folders in the search
options?

McAfee and AVG antivirus products also install their own Office
plugins that are similar to the Norton Office Plugin. Have you
ever installed either of those?

I did include hidden and system files and folders in the search. As far as I
know, the only anti-virus program installed in Symantec.

Thanks for your help. I will keep digging and post what I find.

Another question, how do I get the toolbars to retain their position? The
only posts I have found regarding this involve Adobe Acrobat 7. I have
Acrobat 6 Pro. I am wondering if it is because I am loading Word with the /a
switch to bypass the plugins.

Thank you for all your help. I uninstalled the Office Basic version and
installed the Office Standard version. Everything seems to be working great
now! No Virus Scan and the toolbars are retaining their positions.

Glad you got it to work, and thanks for reporting the solution
that worked for you. Reinstalling Office (or installing a
different Office 2003 edition) should not have made any
difference in this case, but as long as it works...
