"running virus scan" message when Word 2003 opens

K

krazykat

Word 2003 program

When I start word I see the message at the bottom of the screen "running
virus scan" and there is a delay in opening to a blank document.

WHAT I HAVE DONE:

Changed the macro security to "LOW".

Added the /m switch to the start command.

This reduced the delay in opening but the "running virus scan" is still
there with a delay.

If I hold down the shift key and start Word the "running virus scan" is not
present and Word opens in a flash.

I do not have NORTON AV installed

WHAT I WANT TO DO:

Find a way to start Word without the "running virus scan" message and delay
AND not having to hold down the shift key.

I have virus scanning (webroot spysweep, AD ADWARE, Spybot search and
destroy) firewall (Zone alarm pro) so my system is protected. I do not need
WORD to run a new sweep each time it loads.

What is the trick to replace the "hold down the shift key" with a word start
line switch?

THANKS!!

B

Bob Buckland ?:-\)

The running virus scan message generally comes from an outside antivirus program using hooks provided by MS to scan documents that
might otherwise not be available for scanning, such as those protected by passwords.

If you do not have the Officeav.dll file on your computer it's possible that another of the programs you're using have also hooked
into Office.

What happens if you change the macro setting to high and not have trusted items selected in Word as far as speed? That shuts down
most add-ins on startup and loading addins including 'smartTags' can slow things up.

First thanks for the read and reply. Sorry about my delay in answering. (I
thought I had checked to receive an e-mail when there was a reply to my post.
Must not have checked the right box. I did not receive an e-mail about your
posts)>

Anyway, no I do not have "endnotes" installed.

I also checked and "officeav.dll" is not present.

Answer to Bob's question about changing the macro settings. Changed the
macro setting to "high" and cleared all the boxes in the trusted tab.

Very s l o o w load. still get the "running virus scan' message and
get a popup "Security Warning" about running macros.

Also, holding down the shift key at load does not remoeve the "running virus
scan" message" no matter what the macro setting. That must have been a fluke,
because I can not repeat the fast load.

I also did some web searches and saw one post about having xxxx.wll files
(that's w el el not w one one). I did have a single xxxx.wll file in the word
start up folder. I remaned it but there was not affect on the load time and
the "runnning virus scan" was still present.

This is really mading ---- This should be a very simple thing to find and
fix!!!!!!

Any other thoughts??

Thanks, krazykat

Which antivirus program do you use? What was the .wll file you
found in the Word startup folder?

K

krazykat

I have a "stand alone" Norton antivirus, not part of system works. Ialso
have Zone Alarm as a firewall which I believe has a antivirus feature, but I
do not rely or monitor on it. I also have Spy Sweeper to run scans.

The .wll file was found in three different locations, two associated with
WORD.
C:\ ..........\Application Data\Microsoft\Word\STARTUP
D:\Program Files\Office\STARTUP

Both have been removed

Thanks, Krazykat

Reply to garfield-n-odie AND Bob Buckland:

I have been doing some web research. It appears that the problem I am
seeing may be caused by a anvt-virus program running a scan when WORD opens.
I do not have any of the AV programs mentioned.

Do you know of a way to tell which program is running to produce the
"running virus scan" when WORD opens?

Thanks, krazykat

Then that's where your AV check is coming from. You need to look over all of
your settings.

Thanks JoAnn,

I have seen the suggestions on how to "Un-register" the Norton AV program
and one other AV program. But no information about how to un-register the AV
part of Zone Alarm Pro.
Do you have any links or imformation on Zone Alarm Pro and how to
un-register its AV?

JoAnn,

Thanks, I will do some "GOOGLEING" (By the way, I use Zone Alarm for the
firewall, the AV is just a bonus. As a firewall it can't be beat. I think in
the last two years my AV has found 1 or 2 threats)

Also, since we last talked, I found one tip that will stop the "Running
Virus Scan"; use the /a switch in the WORD start command. I tried it and no
more "Running........." Do you know what/why this works? Seems like the /a
command disables running global macros at start. I checked the Global
macros screen- there were 5 listed- but nome seemed related to any AV
programs. Just wondering??

Thanks again.
