Runs slow across network

Veronica

I'm wondering if anyone can help with this problem.

We're running Access 2002. Originally the back end was
running on on the Win 98 machine (it's a bit old and slow)
and the second user was running a new machine with Win XP
Home. It was a little slow, so we transferred the BE to
the XP machine and that runs very fast, but the 98 machine
takes a minute most of the time to do anything now. Other
programs run well and the network connection is good on
the 98 machine, so I don't think it's that.

Thanks!

When it was on the 98 machine, we had the shared folder it
was in, running with a password, and the db aswell. We
can't get that on XP Home for the folder and we haven't
set up the password on the BE yet. We wanted to see if it
would work properly first.

There are a number of issues with more recent operating systems -- the best
collection of multiuser performance information and links that I know about
is MVP Tony Toews' site, http://www.granite.ab.ca/accsmstr.htm. Take a look
and I'd wager you'll find several things you can do to improve performance.

If you are using and AntiVirus program, more than likely it is that program
that's slowing it down. Many of them don't play nice with databases, but the
worst has been McAfee. Try excluding mdb files from being scanned. If that's
not the case, have a look at:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=FH;EN-US;KBHOWTO&sd=GN&ln=EN-
US

which is the Microsoft Knowledge Base. Using the Access 2002 product list
and typing in the word "performance" will bring up several dozen
possibilities. Also visit Tony Toews performance page:

Leopold, there are microsoft.public newsgroups specifically for discussing
Outlook Express where you can get good OE help. This microsoft.public.access
newsgroup is specifically for discussing Microsoft Access database software.

Also, your question has nothing to do with the post to which you replied and
is likely to get lost. When you find the proper newsgroup, post a new
message with a specific question and you'll stand a good chance of getting
help. "just need help with..." is not a specific question and is not likely
to get a useful answer. In newsgroups, you don't address questions to
particular particpants, you just post them and anyone who can and has the
time and energy may answer.
