Runtime Error Crashing

J

Jeff Linder

Word keeps crashing with a message that says: "Runtime Error!
Program:C:\program files\Microsoft Office\Office10\WINWORD.EXE abnormal
program termination"

What does this mean? I have read on this board that Runtime Errors mean I
should check macros and add-ins. I have checked and there do not seem to be
any. Will upgrading to the newest version of Word help? What else can I
do? I use MS Word 2002 version (10.4524.4219 SP-2) and Widows XP Home
Edition 5.1.260 Service Pack 1. Thanks for all help. -Jeff Linder

Hi Jeff,

You can upgrade but more than likely you will encounter the same
error. :)

A "runtime" error means that there is an error in a macro or add-in
that is attempting to run. Typically these macros are created by a
third-party and are not part of the Word installation.

Many third-party applications will create an add-in and place it in
the Office\Startup folder or use a COM add-in (DLL) to integrate their
software with Word.

Another common add-in, the "Microsoft Works Suite Add-in for Word". If
Word came installed as part of Works Suite then uninstall it from
Add/Remove programs in your Control Panel. This add-in is known to
cause Word to crash upon exiting.

Aside from the Works Suite Add-in, to determine if you have any
add-ins you can check for them using the following:

Go to Tools/Templates and Add-Ins and see if there are any global
templates or add-ins listed. If you find any then chances are they are
located in your Office\Startup folder or Word\Startup folder.

The location of the Word\Startup folder can be found under
Tools/Options/File Locations and the Office\Startup folder will be
located in the installation path for Office.

If you find more than one add-in move them one at a time until you
determine which one is causing the problem.

As of Word 2000, Word can have COM add-ins, those that are added in
via the Registry rather than the Startup folders. To check for COM
add-ins add the "COM Add-In" command to your toolbar.

- Right-click any toolbar and select Customize
- On the Commands tab, select the Tools category
- Locate COM Add-Ins on the right
- Drag/Drop to a location of your choice

For more information on COM Add-Ins, see this article:

Beth- So sorry I posted twice. I've seen many postings on this board about Runtime Errors, I thought mine would be overlooked. Your help is greatly appreciated. After reading some of those other messages, I have checked before for add-ins listed in the Tools/Templates and Add-Ins area and I have not found any listed. However, thanks to your suggestion, I did find "Microsoft Works Suite Add-in for Word" and uninstalled this. Do you think the messages I have been getting on opening the application (such as "Word automatically saved changes to the Normal Document Template....") and on close ("The file Normal already exists ....) will end now that I have removed this? Again, thank you. You have no idea how many people appreciate your advice on this board. -Jeff

Hi Jeff,

No problem. I'm glad you found my reply. :)

Yes, if you had the Works Suite Add-in installed then I'm 99.9%
certain it is the cause of the runtime error you are encountering and
the cause behind the prompt to save Word each time you exit. This
add-in is notorious for the problems it can cause - a crash on exit is
just one of the many problems.

Additionally, since you did find the Works Suite add-in then I also
recommend creating a new Normal.dot - especially if you allowed
changes to be saved to your Normal.dot each time you exited Word.
We've found the add-in also causes file bloat in the Normal.dot and
eventually you could encounter a corrupt Normal.dot.

Locate Normal.dot and rename it to OldNormal.dot. Word will create a
new one upon starting.

If this resolves the problem, any customizations can be copied to the
new Normal.dot via the Organizer (Tools/Templates and Add-Ins) Once
this is complete OldNormal.dot can be discarded. If the problem still
exists then you can delete the new Normal.dot and rename your
OldNormal.dot to Normal.dot.

Beth- Thanks again. I must admit that, though I've been using Word for many years, I don't know how to do this. How do I locate Normal.dot. Do I go to Tools/Templates and Add-Ins? -Jef

Hi,
I am also having this problem with Word crashing in the middle of a document that I'm working on with the same error message.
I have checked for add-ins. I think I have found several (not completely computer savy yet!). I have several files with the extension of .DLL. Are they all 'junk' that can be deleted without hurting my computer?
You say to move them one at a time until you find the one causing the problem... where do I move them to?
I also have found the ms works suite add-in... if I delete it will it affect my word program negatively?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks, CheriB

If you're not starting Word from the Works Task Launcher, then you should
definitely uninstall the Works Suite Add-in, as it causes nothing but
trouble. That alone may solve your problems. As for the other add-ins, you
can move them to any other convenient folder (or to the Recycle Bin), just
so you remember where you put them.
