Runtime error gone real bad

My c++ visual basic runtime error started after I had updated Adobe Acrobat
4.0 to 7.0 and removed the 4.0 version through the control panel add/remove
programs. The CPU is a Compaq Pes. Pentium Celeron using XP Home Edition OS
and 512 Mb ram. I have Office 2000 Prof. installed, with Excel 2003 and
Visio Prof. 2003. There are other are varios other applications such as
AutoCAD, Photo Suite, etc. that did not have any problems after the Adobe
upgrade and 4.0 removal.

I searched the discussion groups and read responses referencing
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=555220. I printed the document and tried
the different possible remedies. None of the proposed fixes cured the
problem. I looked further into the discussion groups and found that some
people had sucess by removing (uninstalling) the softwares, then reinstalling.

This is where it turned ugly. I tried ti uninstall the Adobe 7.0 first and
it seemed succesful and asked to restatrt the computer to complete the
uninstall. When it started to reboot, an error message came up in the old
black DOS screen stating the the file c:/windows/system32/config/system was
either missing or corupt and that a possible soloution was to insert the
initial CD Setup disk and press 'r' at the first window/dialouge box in order
to repair the file.

Since operating system CD's are no longer provided when you purchase the
computers anymore, how can an owner solve the problem like this without
taking it to a repair shop and pay the cost of a new computer to have them
use their generic CD while using the product key numbers on the side of my
CPU? I really need the Office and Adobe software, but worse I need the
computer be at least operational without them (Office, Adobe) to get some
work accomplished.

The next question is uninstalling then reinstalling the Office and Adobe
software really going to solve the runtime error? I would deeply appreciate
any assistance that can help me get it going again.

Mary:

I really appreciate your response. I have printed the two documents and
intially reviewed them, but since the computer is not operating yet I can't
apply any of the information. One of the questions I asked was do I need to
uninstall the Office and Adobe to get Office even to open without /a.

The other most pressing issue is how to get the operating system back up and
running before I can even begin to solve the runtime error. Since it was an
OEM XP Home and Compaq has a backup supposedly on its D: drive. I'm trying
to find out how I can access it and get it going. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Mary:

Thanks for the information. I am now in the tail end of restoring the
computer and updating XP SP1 to SP2. After that is complete, I want to try
and tackle the Office runtime error. Do I need to uninstall and then
reinstall the Office software first? The Adobe Acrobat 7.05 is already
removed in the process of the computer bombing. I will eventually need to
reinstall that after the Office is stable.

Thanks,

Mary:

It was unfortunate that the windows repair did not save the office
installation. It left the desktop icons on but none of the software was
loaded. I will go through the install process with the documents you
referenced and also install the Adobe and let you knw what happened. I
appreciate your assistance.

Thanks
