Runtime Error in Office XP and Explorer

C

Carol

I am getting the error message :Microsoft Visual
C++Runtime Library Runtime Error!"

C:\PROGRAM FILES\MICROSOFT OFFICE\OFFICE 10\WINWORD.EXE

This application has requested the Runtime to terminate
in an unusual way. Please contactb the application's
support team for more information.

This error message also appears in relation to Excel as
well as Explorer.

I tried to fix it via the microsoft knowledge base. I
eliminated all Microsoft Works files and launcher. I
also went through the steps for the installation and use
of the Support.dot Template but nothing has worked so far.

Hi Carol,

A "runtime" error means that there is an error in a macro or add-in
that is attempting to run. Typically these macros are created by a
third-party and are not part of the Office installation. (They could
also be caused by a malfunctioning macro virus as well)

Many third-party applications will create an add-in and place it in
the Office\Startup folder or use a COM add-in (DLL) to integrate their
software with Word.

In Word go to Tools/Templates and Add-Ins and see if there are any
global templates or add-ins listed. If you find any then chances are
they are located in your Office\Startup folder or Word\Startup folder.

The location of the Word\Startup folder can be found under
Tools/Options/File Locations and the Office\Startup folder will be
located in the installation path for Office.

If you find more than one add-in move them one at a time until you
determine which one is causing the problem.

As of Word 2000, Word can have COM add-ins, those that are added in
via the Registry rather than the Startup folders. To check for COM
add-ins add the "COM Add-In" command to your toolbar.

- Right-click any toolbar and select Customize
- On the Commands tab, select the Tools category
- Locate COM Add-Ins on the right
- Drag/Drop to a location of your choice

For more information on COM Add-Ins, see this article:

For additional troubleshooting steps for errors starting/exiting Word
see this article:
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm

For Excel check the XLStart folder for add-ins. Also go to
Tools/Add-ins and if you find more that one add-in deselect them one
at a time exit and restart Excel to see if you can determine which
add-in is causing the error.

far.

Beth Melton sent me a very nice reply. I hope this is
the way to post follow up questions on this subject.

I have done everything that she suggested already. It
didn't work.

I have no add ins. I have uninstalled Office XP and
reinstalled it. I have run Norton for virus check twice
and only get ad warnings -- no virus, worms or even a
temperature.

I thought I eliminated Microsoft Works through Control
Panel add/delete program files but when I checked my
programe files in the C directory of My Computer,
Microsoft works was right there. So I deleted it from
the Programme site.

I also can't get the Microsoft update site to scan my
computer for necessary updates.

I have a Dell computer, about 18 months old. I thought
maybe the way to go would be to reinstall Windows XP -
BUT when I went to use the disk it wouldn't take the
product code number. Dell won't help me. I did get
through to a Microsoft number and they verified that the
product number was valid so they wouldn't give me another
one. This person also told me that if I did try to use
the Dell disk, it would have wiped out everything on my
computer. Apparently these disks don't operate like the
old Windows upgrade disks.

Anyway, that's my tale of woe.

Hi Carol,

Again, a runtime error is not caused by a problem in Word or Windows.
Try to following: go to Start run and run:

winword /a

Note the space before the forward slash. Does the error still occur?
If not then it is an indication that the problem does not lie in the
Word installation.

It is possible the macro is stored in your Normal.dot. Locate
Normal.dot and rename it to OldNormal.dot. Word will create a new one
upon starting.

If this resolves the problem, any customizations can be copied to the
new Normal.dot via the Organizer (Tools/Templates and Add-Ins) Once
this is complete OldNormal.dot can be discarded. If the problem still
exists then you can delete the new Normal.dot and rename your
OldNormal.dot to Normal.dot.

Otherwise here is an article which contains additional troubleshooting
steps:
