Runtime Error! message....aurgh!

Hello. I have a major problem! I was doing my resume on MS WORD 2002 (it was
already on my computer) and was going to save it...During the process of
attempting to save it, a screen came up and it said:

"Runtime Error!

Program: c:program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\WINWORD.EXE

abnormal program termination"

What does that mean? I thought I LOST the file....I was soooo MAD! I turned
off the computer and rebooted it (because everything went haywire) and went
back to MS WORD and thank heavens! for AutoRecover and it did save the file
after all! BUT when I opened the file, the same Runtime Error! message came
up and I am not able to use the file????? This has happened before and I
never could figure why it was doing it.

BTW....I do not have the MS WORD cd to re-install if I unistall the MS WORD
2002. Any suggestions! I need to print my resume for a job I'm applying for
and need it ASAP! I'm DESPERATE!

Thanks,

Stephanie

Runtime errors are usually the result of a poorly written/incompatible third
party add-in. This could be something that has installed custom macros
(typically an AutoSave macro) or it could be something in a template
installed in the Word Startup folder. Adobe and Symantec are the usual
suspects for this.

Office MVP Beth Melton offers this explanation of runtime errors:

A "runtime" error means that there is an error in a macro or add-in that is
attempting to run. Typically these macros are created by a third-party and
are not part of the Word installation. (They could also be caused by a
malfunctioning macro virus as well)

Many third-party applications will create an add-in and place it in the
Office\Startup folder or use a COM add-in (DLL) to integrate their software
with Word. Another common add-in, the "Microsoft Works Suite Add-in for
Word" can only be found in your Add/Remove programs list.

Aside from the Works Suite Add-in, to determine if you have any add-ins you
can check for them using the following:

Go to Tools/Templates and Add-Ins and see if there are any global templates
or add-ins listed. If you find any then chances are they are located in
your Office\Startup folder or Word\Startup folder.

The location of the Word\Startup folder can be found under
Tools/Options/File Locations and the Office\Startup folder will be located
in the installation path for Office.

If you find more than one add-in move them one at a time until you
determine which one is causing the problem.

As of Word 2000, Word can have COM add-ins, those that are added in via the
Registry rather than the Startup folders. To check for COM add-ins add the
"COM Add-In" command to your toolbar.

- Right-click any toolbar and select Customize
- On the Commands tab, select the Tools category
- Locate COM Add-Ins on the right
- Drag/Drop to a location of your choice

For more information on COM Add-Ins, see this article:

Suzanne:

you said "If you find more than one add-in move them one at a time until you

I say: Where do I move the add-in to where? I'm not very comfortable at
moving files or whatever so please, if you can, give me step by step the best
you can so I can attempt to fix the problem"

Thanks,

Stephanie

Anywhere other than the Startup folder. If you have the Recyle Bin enabled
(so that files you delete go to the Recycle Bin) probably the easiest thing
to do is press Delete (you'll get a prompt asking if you want to send the
file to the Recycle Bin). The advantage to this is that when you open the
Recycle Bin, you can right-click on a file and choose Restore, and Windows
remembers where to put it back to.

Suzanne,

It took me a while to remove all the .dll files in MSWord and eventually in
the add/remove program, I found the Microsoft works suite add-in and removed
the program.

NOW, I have ANOTHER problem...when I opened the MS WORD 2002...a bar came up
saying "The feature you are trying to use is on a CD-ROM or other removable
disk that is not available. Insert the 'Microsoft Word 2002' disk and click
OK... thats a problem...I DON"T have a disk for it....Now what do I do??? I
really need to complete my resume and turn it in soon...

HELP!

If this is referring to something that you deleted, you can restore it from
the Recycle Bin. If you don't have a CD for Word, how did you install it? If
it was part of Works Suite, then that's the CD you need to insert.

It was already on the computer when I bought it from Gateway.com. That's why
I'm frustrated on how to have it re-installed IF I remove it and install it
again.

Sometimes, OEM software is not conspicuously labeled. Do you have any of the
CDs that came with your Gateway computer? It seems likely that Word 2002 is
on your Works CD. It's also possible that the CD that contains Works also
has other software, and the word "Works" might not be in large bold print.
Check the fine print.

On the CD that came with my Toshiba notebook, Works & Word are on a CD
that's labeled Toshiba Recovery and Applications/Drivers. No hint of Works
or Word on the CD itself.

Yes, that's one thing I like about Dell: my Office CD was clearly labeled
and standard-looking, with the Certificate of Authenticity glued into its
little cardboard case.
