Russian character set

I need to add some text in Russian. Is there a common font (e.g. Arian,
Times) which supports the Russian character set or do I need to purchase/add
a special character set?

All the regular fonts that include Unicode characters contain the Cyrillic
subset (the real name of the "Russian" characters). In the Insert > Symbol
dialog, set the Subset dropdown to Cyrillic. You can use the dialog directly
or use the keyboard shortcuts, or define your own easier shortcuts. See
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/General/InsertSpecChars.htm.

If you have more than a small piece of text to insert, though, this method
will get very tedious. You can download Cyrillic fonts, either free or
commercial, from many sites. Look at
http://www.google.com/search?source...C,GGLC:1969-53,GGLC:en&q="cyrillic+font"+free.

There is NO need to download or purchase any fonts...

As Jay correctly pointed, many standard Windows fonts already contain
Cyrillic (Russian) - under Windows 2000, XP or newer.
That is, one can buy US English Windows 2000 and then go at once to say
http://rambler.ru and see Russian text normally.

The Unicode fonts that always contain Cyrillic are
Arial
Times New Roman
Courier New

Based on the configuration and whether or not MS Office is installed:
- Tahoma
- Verdana
- etc.

Under Windows 95/98/ME one achieves the same by activating "MS
Multilanguage Support" via Control Panel:
http://RusWin.net/cyr9x.htm

Now, to _type_ in Russian one can:

- if it's a rare case, occasional need to type -
use a modern Virtual Keyboard with regular keybord input (it's too
tedious to input by mosue but mouse input is also available):
........................ http://Kbd.RusWin.net

- for more often need/larger text - activate _system_ keyboard support
for Russian -
see "How to type Russian under non-Russian Windows" section here:
................. http://RusWin.net/

Cyrillic characters are included with the Unicode fonts installed by
Windows - certainly in Arial and TNR. The simplest way to access them is to
setup a Russian keyboard in Windows, and use the on-screen keyboard to show
where the characters lie.
