There is NO need to download or purchase any fonts...
As Jay correctly pointed, many standard Windows fonts already contain
Cyrillic (Russian) - under Windows 2000, XP or newer.
That is, one can buy US English Windows 2000 and then go at once to say
http://rambler.ru and see Russian text normally.
The Unicode fonts that always contain Cyrillic are
Arial
Times New Roman
Courier New
Based on the configuration and whether or not MS Office is installed:
- Tahoma
- Verdana
- etc.
Under Windows 95/98/ME one achieves the same by activating "MS
Multilanguage Support" via Control Panel:

Now, to _type_ in Russian one can:
- if it's a rare case, occasional need to type -
use a modern Virtual Keyboard with regular keybord input (it's too
tedious to input by mosue but mouse input is also available):

- for more often need/larger text - activate _system_ keyboard support
for Russian -
