S/MIME control?

I have a question/dilema. I am what you would call an intermediate when it comes to computers. my company is making the transition (as I type) from allowing us to use smtp protocol to only using OWA w/ IMap4 protocol. Part of my problem lies in trying to send files to my fellow co-workers in other offices is beginningn to be a huge pain. In teh help portion it states that if teh S/MIME control option is installed on my system I can drag into the body of the message
My question(s) is/are...
What is the s/mime control
Would it severly affect anything with my sytem or my ability to function w/ teh exchange server if I obtained it
If not, how do I get it/install it

I am working w/ W xp2002 sp
Please help.
