Safari appending extra filename extension

Gang,
I don't know if this is a Safari question or an Office question, but I
thought I'd throw it out here as a start since I don't see this
happening with other types of files (eg, PDF).

When I download an Excel doc from my employer's website in Safari it
appends .xlt to the filename, even though .xls is already part of the
filename. When I download a Word doc, with .doc in the filename, it
appends .dot to the end. It doesn't replace the original extension, it
just adds a second one.

It does this when I simply left click on the link, but it also does it
when I right click and select "download linked file as." In fact, in
the save-as dialog, the filename that is listed in the box does not
include the additional extension. It only appears once the file is
downloaded.

Any ideas? It's not a huge deal, but I do have to delete the extra
extension off of each such filename before the Finder will recognize it.

Versions:

Safari 3.1.2
Office 12.1.1
OS X 10.4.11

thanks,
Dennis

Oops, I just saw a reply in another thread ("Re: since 2008 install
safari downloads append .dot .pot .xla"), so I should have posted there.

But doesn't seem as if this issue has been resolved, so I'll just keep
an eye on the group and wait.

It's totally fine to start a new thread, especially when the other
thread is old, long and confusing. But yeah, there's no resolution--it
seems to be a mixture of Apple and MS causes and MS is working on it,
some people report improvement with the Office updates, some people
don't. Manually removing the extension is the workaround.

It's a problem with Word and Excel and PPT, yes.

I don't know that there will be any news here that isn't discovered by
applying a released update, though. :)
