salvaging a .pst file backup copy

I'm recovering from a complete desktop reload and find that my backup copy of
my Outlook .pst file is not recognized as a .pst file for import. It appears
that instead of using the backup tool, I just copied the .pst file onto my
external hard drive. It is now listed as Outlook.NK2 as an Outlook Data
File. I tried simply changing it to .pst which did not work. I tried the
inbox repair tool, which similarly did not recognize it. Any other ideas?
It's 562kb and has all my contacts, stored emails, etc. Thanks.

The nk2 file is not your outlook data file its likely to be your
autocomplete name cache.
Do you have any *.pst file on your drive?

That's all that the backup tool does - it simply makes a copy after Outlook
closes.

It is now listed
as Outlook.NK2 as an Outlook Data File.

You've copied the wrong file. The NK2 file is the autocompletion cache. It
does not contain your Outlook data (except those addresses to which you've
sent mail).

Once you have found your copied PST file, don't use Import, just open
the file with Outlook.

I'm learning. Humbug; dumb error. I wish they would use different icons for
the files. I will be using the backup tool now because then you know it will
backup the .pst file I'm using.
