Sample Database install error

I've been trying to install the sample data base, and have yet to be able
install. I am running a single system with WSS (SharePoint Services), SQL
2000 with SP4. Have installed Project Server 2003 and it "seems" to be fine
to this point. I am trying to install the Sample Database so as to help
with testing, etc, but>>>>>

I keep getting a "Pre-validation error" msg with the following msg:
"Microsoft SQL Server 2000 with service Pack 3 must be installed before
configuring the sample database"

The result is I cannot restore (or for that matter backup up) the sample
data base. If I run the @@version on SQL it shows version 8.00.2039 which
is the current version.

Hi Tom,

Have you tried installing with SQL 2000 SP3 and then upgrading to SP4?
I thought I have read somewhere that there was a problem with sample
database if you installed directly with SP4.

You never know???
