sample formula for status field

Does anyone know the formulas used to create the status field? I'm using the status field but am finding that tasks are being set as late that I do not really want to be late so I want to create my own "status" field so I can adjust the formulas to fit my needs. Can anyone show me the formulas/process to set this up
