Sample Page

I am doing a web page for my son in FP 2003. Is there a way to upload the
page to the web so that he can view it without having the site visible to
others. The page is not published yet. He does not want it up til it is
done and ready. I was thinking if I "saved as" the index page to
"sample.htm" and set the original index.htm page to "do not publish", that
he would be able to get to the site by typing in www.hispage.com/sample.
Would this work til the web page is complete and I could then delete the
sample page and use the original index page. Hope I am making myself clear.

Thanks

Create a folder named sample in the website, place the experimental home
page in that folder, and publish the folder.

As long as there are no links to the page, it will be hidden from all
eyes, including search engines.
The page can be accessed using a link similar to
http://www.example.com/sample/

The original (working) home page for the website should be left as it is
to avoid confusion. When the experimental page is complete move it in
FrontPage to the root web, replacing the original home page.

OK. That's good for the home page, but I also have all the other pages from
the web site that he needs to view. Would I move all of them in a sample
folder? Would I tag the same pages in the root web to "do not publish"? He
wants to be able to view the entire web site.

If I'm clear on this, I would highlight and move my entire web site to a
folder named "sample" then publish it?

Then if all is approved, move everything back into the root folder?

Thanks

How large is the site "file size" wise??
Browse to the site's root folder on your machine using windows explorer,
right click the folder and select Send to:
Compressed / zipped folder.
Email him the zipped folder.
He can unzip it and run it just like a web site from his desktop.
Anything requiring extensions won't work but all images and text will
display properly.

I'm at work now so I'm not sure of the size of the folder. I want to do
this for a site I'm developing at work also. It should be quite large since
there will be a lot of pictures. Can I just put the index file into a
"sample" folder and upload that. Will all of the links work when they go to
www.sitename.com/sample? I take it I just put in the index file into the
"sample folder", correct?

Thanks,

EDITED:
I think you mean to just put the index file into the "sample" folder and all
the uploaded pages should link from that correctly. Am I correct?

OK. Thanks. If I "move" it all in Front Page, I should be able to "move"
it all back and Front Page will keep track of it, correct?

There is a terminology difficulty here. You are talking about a
website, but saying web page. To my mind a web page is a single HTML
document with associated CSS, JavaScript and image files. A *web site*
is a collection of web pages.

As Steve and Rob have said, you should copy or move the entire site into
the sample folder. I will go further, and say after it has all been
moved right click on the sample folder and choose "Convert to Web". The
Sample folder and it's contents will now behave as a complete and
independent web site, which can be published on its own to the sample
folder on the server (which should also be a sub web).

Thanks Ron. Sorry about the confusion in my terminology. I will get it
straight sooner or later <grn>. Your suggestion of "Convert to Web" worked.
When I first moved all the folders into the sample folder, the links would
not work. Now they work.

Question #2. When I move the files back, will the links still work or is
there something that I will have to do?

Really appreciate all the time and help given in these groups. I would be
lost without you all.

If you are going to replace the entire website, then the best way will
be to publish the subweb to the root web.
Open the subweb in FrontPage, then File->Publish
Click cancel if the logon screen for your server comes up, then change
the destination to the folder containing the root web. Publish changed
pages only.
You could drag the pages - but this requires two instances of FrontPage
to be open - one for the root web and one for the subweb.

I don't have the website for my son up yet. He would like for me to upload
it so only he could see it to check it out before we officially publish it.
So I thought if I could create a subweb and upload it all he could go to
www.hissite.com\subwebname and view the site. Then when everthing is OK I
could just drag the folders back into the root folder on my pc through FP.

Would also like to be able to do this with future pages once the site is up
and running. Have him preview them before I actually publish to the main
site.

I'm not at work now, but I sort of did this at work. Created a website.
created a subsite and dragged all the files into that folder. When I hit
publish, it uploaded them all into the sitename\subfolder. I have not moved
them back yet though.

Hope I'm making myself clear.

Thanks,
Carol

Dragging individual pages should work, but do not forget to also drag
any images etc. associated with the file.
View->Reports->Problems->Hyperlinks will help you fix any links that are
broken during this process.
Cut and Paste of the pages from subweb to root web normally does not
change the links (but might change the links if cut/paste between
ordinary folders in the same web.

Thanks for your help. Am anxious to get it up and running. He is starting
his own business and it's very exciting.

Carol,

He shouldn't be overly concerned that someone will see it. With no links to
it, only someone with the complete folder path would see it. I would assume
that only those that he has told and that they have told and that they have
told, etc. will have that. If it will be on the Internet, it can't be a big
secret.
