Sample style galleries for complex suite of numbering styles

Matt Bowen

Hi,

I'm a lawyer in Perth, Australia.

We are in the middle of rebuilding our Normal.dot template. We have just
moved to Word 2007 and also are building a new suite of legal precedents.
We have decided to take the opportunity to rework our styles generally. We
have about 100 lawyers doing all sorts of different work, and so need a
library of different styles including different numbering styles. (We'd
like to standardise but as you know managing lawyers is like herding cats.
Plus also different tasks do call for different numbering styles. Ie. a
letter is different from a court pleading, and both will differ from a
contract.) We will thus need some families of numbered headings, some
families of numbered body text, and some mixed headings and body text eg for
contract documents.

I am moderately familiar with Word numbering, and with styles and list
templates, and so propose to build this from the ground up.

What I am hoping to find is some examples of such a style library, so I can
get some ideas on mundane matters such as how to name the different styles
so they come out meaningfully for the users. I have seen some styles named
which actually summarise the numbering. Eg the style itself might be called
"Head 1.1(a)". But I can also see that quickly becoming bewildering.

I'm willing to spend money in this regard, so if for eg. there is a text you
can recommend that would be great.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions,

Matt

I'd be happy to provide you with working samples for your reworked Styles on
a consultancy basis:

Letter
Deed/Agreement
Brief
Contracts

You imply only lawyers work on your legal docs, but not also wp and
secretarial support staff?

I'd require a little more information relating to DMS (Document Management
System) if any and current document samples and work methods.

Please contact (e-mail address removed).

You should not be using the Normal.dot template as the basis for the
documents that you prepare. Rather, you should have an individual template
for each specific group of documents, with the appropriate numbering styles
set up in each.

As far as a text that explains how to set up numbering, you cannot do better
than to visit the website of fellow MVP Shauna Kelly to which you have been
directed in another response.

Hi,

I'm a lawyer in Perth, Australia.

We are in the middle of rebuilding our Normal.dot template.

Hint - do not modify the Normal template!!! You are asking for trouble.

1) Under some conditions Word will regenerate the default Normal and
your changes will be gone.

2) If a document created with your custom Normal is moved to a computer
with the default (or a different) Normal, all sorts of weird things can
happen.

Create your own template under a different name.

You probably should take a look at the Quick Style sets feature in
Word 2007. You can set up multiple style sets and then bring them
into the document. The style sets are stored as templates, and you
should be able to distribute them to users by copying them to the
user's QuickStyles folder.
