Save a .one file while open

Sometimes, while working extensively on a section, I want to be able to save
the work I've done (lest a crash or something unexpected causes me to lose
what I've done). But when I try to save the section, I get a message saying
I'm trying to overwrite an open section, and that I have to close it to save
it.

Is there any way to save work in a section while the section is open, just
as one can save a Word doc by clicking File/Save?

You shouldn't need to save it. OneNote automatically saves changed pages
when you leave the section and no less frequently than every 30 seconds.

If you are really concerned about loosing data, you might want to go to
Tools--> Options--> Backup tab and set the number to a lower number.

T.,

OneNote saves your work automatically. From discussions in the distant
past I seem to recall that this is done about every 30 seconds when
you have a section open, but can't immediately put my finger on a
definitive source for that recollection.

When I am feeling particularly paranoid (having just made some
important change) I select from the Tools menu, the Options, then
select Backup and hit the Backup Now button. That backs up the current
section. Unfortunately if you do that very often the Backup folder can
become a little cluttered with timed backups.

But I always say it's better to have ten backups than none. :)

Good idea. Thanks.

It would seem that to simply save immediately without making an additional
backup, you could just choose another section (and immediately switch
back) to continue work.
