Save and Save As commands unavailable (dimmed)

Office 2003, SP2, SP Professional SP2, Server 2003 network. Several users,
individually over the last few months have had their Word Save and Save As
commands dimmed. No other Office aps or commands affected. No other user
profile, if present, is affected. Problem can be fixed by creating a new user
profile in Windows. Is there a way to fix this without having to start the
user with a fresh profile and thus losing many of the application and
personal settings?

The disappearance of those commands often means either the presence of a
virus, a damaged normal.dot file, or damaged registry entries. Assuming it's
not a virus, try the steps shown here to diagnose and isolate the problem:

I discovered a "fix". I still don't know the root cause but the commands
have been retored on the two most recent occurrences by:
Click Tools, Customize
Click FIle menu, right-click "Save AS" command
Click Reset on pop up menu.
Repeat for "Save".

Ah. In that case, I can probably guess how they got zapped.

If you press Ctrl+Shift+_, the mouse pointer turns into a large -. The next
command or tool you click on gets removed from the menu or toolbar.

People often press that key combination by mistake when they are looking for
one of the different hyphen variations.

The controls would disappear altogether though, not become grayed out?
If the problem should reappear, I'd certainly look for macro viruses.
