Save as across W98/XP network

I'm trying to help someone out who has added a new XP machine to a W98 small
office network. They run software which uses Word docs organised via an
Access 97 database.
She has been experiencing problems when pulling docs up to her XP machine,
modifying them and saving back to the database on the W 98 machine, using the
"Save as" command. She gets messages about premission being denied or that
the database is locked.
I looked into this some time back and found reports that one of the XP
security updates had broken this. She has been hit hard by this again last
week, and I now can't find the reports. Is there any known problem like this?
If it is a question of security settings, is there a good guide to this wrt
xp working with W98 anywhere?
Thanks

This is a Microsoft Access newsgroup. We deal with Access (the database
application), not network or Windows.

Does it work properly without going through the database? Does the user have
the appropriate permissions on the destination share? The networking will
need to work, allowing the user to read, write, create, and delete in the
share before the database will work properly. If that isn't working, I would
suggest one of the WinXP or Win98 networking newsgroups.

If all of that appears to be ok, she may have better luck having the WinXP
computer being the host or upgrading the Win98 host to Win2k Pro or WinXP
and just use the Win98 computers as clients.

I believe it stopped working after a Microsoft upgrade to XP SP2 about 2 or 3
months back, but this only affected, or maybe was only noticed for, Word docs
directly saved. The workaround that we put in place was to rename the files
on the local machine and then save them across the network to the distant W98
machine. This last week a similar effect became a problem with the Saving of
Access data to the W98 'database server'.
I'm not at the site and trying to help by email.
She is locked into her W98 network by the contract with the supplier and the
supplier of the software system she uses. Both deny it is their problem.
It appears to me that something has changed with te abiity to save Access
and Word files between the 2 OS's. She can save but not save as to the same
named file.

Right off-hand, it sounds as if the locks aren't being released after
opening the file. While she may be locked into here Win98 network, she does
have an XP computer on that network. I would recommend making it the
"server" instead of the Win98 computer. A workstation is limited to 10
incoming connections, so this won't work of the are more than 10 other
client computers.

This definitely sounds more like a network problem than an Access problem.
If the network isn't working properly, then Access won't either. I recommend
you ask in the networking newsgroups if they know anything that can help
you.

Many thanks for the reply. I think I will have to ask in the networking
group. The network is 4 desktop machines plus her laptop, which she takes
away with her on the road. Her W98 laptop issued smoke, so she bought a new
XP laptop to replace it. The 'server' obviously has to stay in the office.
Thanks again.
