"Save as" always says "not responding" folders won't open

These past two days, everytime I try to save a document in Word, I get a
"not responding" error. Also, when I try to use the arrow to the right of
the Internet I get the same "not responding" error appears and I have to
reboot.

The quick but unsafe way is to uninstall the security patch that's
causing the problem. In Add/Remove Programs, check the box at the top
marked "Show updates". Select "Security Update for Windows XP
(KB908531)" and click the Remove button.

For a better workaround, until a new security patch is ready, read
Steven Hui's post at
http://groups.google.com/group/micr...&q=verclsid+hui&rnum=5&hl=en#a9fb82836c014916.
Use the registry change in Method 1. Also read the replies that follow
that post, which give some useful advice.

Jay,

Deleting "Security Update for Windows XP (KB908531)" worked great. My PC is
working as it should. This includes opening saved documents. the "save as"
function and the down arrow at the end of the Internet Explorer address bar.

Removing the update worked for me but - I didn't have any HP services or
drivers loaded either.

But remember, uninstalling that patch does leave the security hole.

A Microsoft employee posted this advice a few minutes ago:

"There is now a KB article (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918165)
addressing the issues that customers are reporting with MS06-015. It
provides information on the cause and what the customer can do to
eliminate the problems they're seeing without removing the security
update."

How do you know that it is not installed?

I went into Add/Remove programs in the Control Panel and do not have the
patch KB908531 listed. I figured that is the only place it would be listed
under if it was installed onto my machine.

.... and "view updates" is checked?

When this is checked, at least on my system, updates are listed by date of
installation. In my case it was installed on 4/12/2006.

I hope I'm not being pedantic here. It is just that if this is your problem
you need to work on it. If it is not, we need to focus elsewhere. The
description of your problem seems to fall right into what this update does
when it comes into contact with certain other software.
