Save-as and Font accept first letter only

M

Mike Wiersma

I've been running XP on a new system for about a year
now. I don't have SP2 loaded. I'm running Office Suite
97. My problem is in MS Word only. I have loaded both
patch loads sr1 and sr2.

This problem is common to (at least) two dialog boxes -
SaveAs and the Font selection box from the Format->font
pull down menu or from the right click font menu.

Here's the problem -
SaveAs menu - The text field for the File name: will only
register a single character. This means if I save a file
that I wish to name "mynewfile", Word will save it as a
file named "m". I can type in as many characters as I
want, it just ignores all but the first one.

Font dialog box - The problem is more severe here. All
font names selected from the slider bar appear as only
the first letter of the name in the Font: text box
itself. The FontStyle: box has the same problem - Arial
is called "A", Tahoma is called "T", Bold is "B" (you get
the idea). Since these are invalid names, I can't use
this dialog box at all to change my font. I get an error
when I hit OK. The error message says "The font style
name does not exist." I can change fonts from the
toolbar if I use the font menu from there.

It also appears to me that some of the fonts are not what
they say they are. Many fonts seem to look alike.

Perhaps my fonts are not loaded correctly. I don't
rememeber loading any extra fonts on this system, but I
may have. I had a bunch of fonts on an old PC and I may
have tried loading them in to this one and just forgotten
about it. Is there a way that I can check to see if I
have extra or "foreign" fonts?

Thanks

Mike
