Save as and open do not respond

I can use open to bring up a file that is not in a folder, but my folders
will not respond to the open command. Save is also does not respond. I do
have theNorton Antivirus 205 program in place with automatic live update
activated, but that has been there since January and the problem began only
two days ago. Derek
