"save as" dialogue - cannot selectdirectories in left panel of dialogue box

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel

1. Receive a mail message in Entourage with a Word document attached, Word not running at the time;
2. Double click the attachment, Word launches, opens doc;
3. Select "File.Save As...." Default directory is "Saved Attachments." Click a directory on the left pane, and the selection does not occur, i.e., the target directory remains "Saved Attachments."
4. Select the drop-down for the target directory widget and select another directory; now clicking on the left pane will work.
5. Don't save it, but cancel out. Try again. Same behavior.
6. Try again, but this time save it somewhere. Now, on subsequent tries, it works fine.
7. Close the doc. Don't quit Word. Open it again from the mail message. Works fine.
8. Quit Word. Open doc again from email. Same bad behavior.

Hi,

thanks for reporting this. I have not had the time to see if this behaviour
can be reproduced on my machine, but generally speaking, if the Open or Save
dialogue windows are involved, the problem is usually not caused by
Microsoft Office, but by the Finder. All the open/save dialogues in most
applications on Mac OS X are generated by the Finder; if you can observe a
similar behaviour in other apps, it might be worth reporting this to Apple
as well.

Hmmm... I can't repro your Step 3 here.

When I choose another folder, the destination changes to the other folder.

You should note that the window you are looking at is a Finder Window, it's
not part of Word, an the Finder (Unix) has a different concept of "Current
Directory" to Windows. The directory should not change unless you complete
an action to Save the file.

You may wish to slowly wean yourself away from double-clicking attachments
in email :) The next version of Microsoft Office for the Mac will have its
VBA back, which means that if the document carries any form of active
content, it's gotcha before you have time to think.

Always Save first, so the virus checker can run it through the sheep dip
before an embedded nasties can harm your system.

Hope this helps

Just echoing the replies of others... I don't experience what you're
reporting in #3. Selecting a destination is no problem whatever. As both
John & Michel have stated, file management operations are supplied by the
OS, so I'd suggest you grab the OS X Leopard 10.5.6 COMBO Update from the
Apple Downloads site & run a permissions repair after applying it.
