Save as HTML

When saving an excel document as HTML it seems the result is awful. I would expect something that is close to the spreadsheet,e.g, an HTML table. For example, when saving a word file as HTML, the result is a fair representation of the formatted word document. But in excel, essentially only the data survives, and they are put at odd places. Is there any way to convert an excel file to html with a good result?

Without knowing what "odd places" means, nor what "only the data
survives" means, it's hard to respond.

I convert .xls/.xlsx files to .htm all the time with excellent results.

Does your workbook have more than one worksheet? If so, are you ensuring
that, if you move the <name>.htm file, that you move the <name>_files
folder to the same place?

If it's a single worksheet, the .htm file should have style information
as well as an html table structure.

Also, check Preferences/General/Web Options... Are the settings in the
preference panes reasonable for your setup?

Thanks for the reply. There are two specific issues
1. Borders are not preserved.
2. The cells (i.e. column and row spacing) are huge.

With respect to 2, maybe it's an issue somewhere else. When I copy and paste an excel spreadsheet to Word, the cells also end up huge, not at all similar to the spacing in Excel. For example, each row becomes maybe 4 lines tall, although it was only 1 line in excel. This is exactly what happens when I export to html.

With respect to 1, If I use the default border width, I get the same
results. If I use thicker borders, they show up in the browser (still
thin, at least in Safari).
