"Save As" only saves doc as initial, not name

When I use "Save As" and type a title for the doc, such as
"Widrick papers", it is saved as "W.doc", never as "Widrick
papers.doc".

No matter what I name a file, it is saved as 'initial'.doc.

I've deleted "Normal.dot" and still have the problem.

I'm using Word '97. How do I fix this?
