Save as PDF?

S

Stephen Fox

Using Office X. Have a large document that I'd like to convert (save)
as a PDF file. When I follow Help instructions, I only get one blank page.

Need some advice here. Thanks!

Steve

Before anyone can attempt to help you need to indicate which specific
version of the OS you're using, what exact update level of Office X, and -
since very few of us are still using that version - what "Help" instructions
are you following?

Without details there really isn't much to offer.

There is a slim chance that the rest of your PDF is nearby in another
PDF file. (See the thread you accidentally hijacked) This would be more
likely if you had a section break at or near the beginning of your
document. (In Word, hit cmd-8 to show invisibles while searching for
it)
Deleting section breaks is a black art. Try positioning the insertion
point before it and hitting forward delete.

If that does not help, try dividing you problem into bits. You might
make a new document by copying and pasting from the problem one. An
effective trick, known as a "Maggie" is to leave the last paragraph
mark out of what's copied. That leaves behind all sorts of evil
detritus that would not have accumulated in a well implemented piece of
software, which Word v.X certainly ain't, although it is better than at
least one of its successors.

Another trick you might try is to specify a different "printer" before
saving as PDF. OK, it might mess up your margins, but it may help
resolve the problem. If you only have a single printer, choose "any
printer" from page set-up.

Hi Steve -

If your version info is accurate Office X is seriously lacking major
updates. The current build should be 10.1.9, so you might run AutoUpdate
(Help> Check for Updates) & see if that makes a difference. If you have a
problem getting the update it can still be downloaded from:

-9381-18A389D5599A&displaylang=en>

BTW - Office X is end-of-life & there will not be any further updates. Also,
it's quite possible that continuing to run it in Leopard may start to
present conflicts even if the current problem isn't one of them.

Hello Stephen,

I strongly endorse CyberTaz's remarks. Office X was brought out in a great
hurry to support Apple's launch of OS X. OS X has successively changed
almost beyond recognition since then; Leopard and Office X are not at all
comfortably matched. I suggest it would be a very good idea to buy Office
2004, for which genuine versions are available cheaply on eBay etc.

That's good to hear, Steve!

You might gain some insights into the newer features of Word if you read
some notes on the way I use Word for the Mac, titled "Bend Word to Your
Will", which are available as a free download from the Word MVPs' website
(http://word.mvps.org/Mac/Bend/BendWordToYourWill.html).

[Note: "Bend Word to your will" is designed to be used electronically and
most subjects are self-contained dictionary-style entries. If you decide to
read more widely than the item I've referred to, it's important to read the
front end of the document -- especially pages 3 and 5 -- so you can select
some Word settings that will allow you to use the document effectively.]

Clive,

Funny thing happened on the way to the update. I updated to 10.1.9 - at
least I thought I did - but Word now says it's 10.1.8. Dunno.

There's only one person selling 2004 on eBay. I tried bidding, but it
kept saying I was under. eBay remains mostly a mystery to me.

Anyhoo, no change in not being able to "save as PDF." I even removed
all page breaks, but no help there.

Hi Steve -

Don't let the numbers confuse you :) Not every component is modified by any
given update so it's numbering may not change. That's OK.

Sorry the problem is continuing, but it's stil better that Office is
updated. Did you run Disk Utility - Repair Disk Permissions afterward? If
no, do that now, then restart your Mac. If that doesn't help...

The problem isn't a matter of *Page* Breaks - What Elliott referred to in
his reply is *Section* Breaks. The latter can cause a Word document to be
output as multiple PDFs which then have to be combined into a single PDF,
which can be done using Leopard's Preview app. Reread his post carefully &
follow his suggestions if repairing permissions doesn't rectify the problem.

As for obtaining Office 2004, I've seen the upgrade offered for about $169;

http://www.mwave.com/mwave/SkuSearch_v2.asp?SCriteria=AA73514

Google for " mac office 2004 upgrade" for other possibilities.

If there is, it is pretty enormous. I regularly PDF Word docs > 500
pages each.

Mainly for Preview.app's superior searching and better Spotlight
indexing[1], but also in preparation for booklet printing, not to
mention delivering copies by email so I and the recipient can agree on

1. Dunno about later flavours, but the last time I checked, the

You did say you were using Mac OS X 10.5.5?
Preview.app is the PDF viewer that comes with OS X
Spotlight is the document indexing facility that comes with OS .
