"save as picture" without background

I right-clicked on a round shape in PPT 2007 and chose "Save as Picture" from
the list. The problem is that the saved picture has a black square background
behind it. This is so even though the background of the slide as actually
white. Is there a way to use the "Save as Picture" feature and just save the
shape itself, without any type of background (neither black, white, nor
othewise)?

The shape of you image is going to be square/rectangle regardless of what shape the shape is. You will have to edit out the background in a paint program

Which file format did you chose? Only PNG, TIF, GIF, EMF, WMF can have
transparent parts. I would prefer PNG for bitmap images and EMF for vector
images.

Best regards,
