"Save as Web Page..." default on menu. Why?

M

McFly

I work in Microsoft Word for OS X -- a LOT. I save many new documents
a day, and it has become extrememly frustrating because the default
"Save as" function in the menu is "Save as web page..." Every time I
save, I have to Save as Web Page, then change the format on the
dropdown menu on the next window. Shouldn't the default be "Save as
Word Document" or something? How can I change this? I've fiddled with
settings forver ...

Help!
Thanks much,
McFly

Hi McFly,

The setting you're in search of is found as follows:

* From the Word menu choose Preferences
* In the left side click Save
* Dead center in the dialog box it says "Save Word Files As: " and there's a
drop down menu. Choose "Word Document"
* Click OK

Jim,

Thanks for the quick response! The setting you mention is the setting I have
played around with most. No matter what I set the dropdown menu to in the
Save preferences, it remains "Save As Web Page" in the File menu. In fact,
for the past few weeks the dropdown menu has been set only to "Word
Document" -- and no amount of quitting the application, or restarting the
computer seems to change the contextual menu. Note: I am running OS 10.3.1
and have installed patches all the way up to "Microsoft Office v. X 10.1.5
Update".

Ideas?

As bizarre as this sounds, this is exactly what happened on a previous
install of Office 2001 in OS 9! When I opened my fresh OS X install and saw
"Save as Web Page" on the initial launch of the application I began to think
it was just the engrained, default setting. Odd.

Thank you,
McFly

Could it be that the proper command is just lost from your File menu? Have
you tried accessing Save As... through a keyboard shortcut? When you create
a new doc, and then hit cmd-S, does the dialog box come up set to Save as
Web Page?

Hi again,

You can check your menu settings using Tools > Customize. Select the menu
and click the "Reset" button.

In the "Save As" menu, there's an "Options" button near the bottom. Clicking
on it takes you to the "Save" Preferences window. There, you can set the
default to "Save Word Files As: Word Document."

Sent using the Entourage X Test Drive.
