Save as web page - some characters show as question mark

When I use the File > Save As > Web Page, copy the resulting files to a web
location, and view the web pages, certain bullets and quotes are shoing in
the browser (IE6) as question marks. Other than editing the htm files in a
text editor and changing the code to a list (<ul>), is there a work-around or
fix for this problem?

Hi Matt,

You didn't mention which Office app and version you're using or provided a URL for a web page where this can be seen, but this can
happen with several features, including bullet & numbering choice in Word; certain fonts that aren't generally used/expected to be
available in every PC when visiting a web page; if items such as 'smart quotes' are being used in Word (Tools=>Autocorrect) and also
if the encoding for the web page isn't set correctly (Tools=>Options=>General=>Web Options in Word.

Sorry for the incomplete information. I'm using MS Word 2000.

The characters including bullets. I am using the default bullets and the
style "Bullet". The resulting character is a hexidecimal B7.

The quotes result in the hexidecimal characters 93 and 94.

I can't provide a URL because the pages are on an internal company support
page.

These characters are all font and character-set dependent. If they're to
be viewed as intended, the web page must correctly declare the character
set in use and the viewer must have the appropriate font available. The
so-called "smart" quotes are a particular problem in this regard because
the assignment to hexadecimal is specific to Windows 1252, a.k.a "ANSI".
Unless the browser has the correct infomration on the character set used,
it will be unable to display them.
