"Save As" Word 2004 files gives XP permission issue

Here's the problem. A shared folder located on a PC running XP
Professional (NTFS formatted) is being accessed over a wireless LAN by
a G4 iBook running 10.3.8 via SMB/CIFS. When saving newly created
documents (Word & Excel files) to the shared folder on the PC there are
no problems. When an already created document (that lives in the shared
folder) is opened and is then "saved as" to the folder 4 times out of 5
you get a dialog box that says "Word cannot save this document due to a
naming or permission error on the destination volume". (The Mac user
prefers to open both Word 2004 & Excel 2004 files over the network
instead of copying them to the Mac first and then open them and
subsequently.) If the user tries several times it may save OK to the
directory. Note-each time the "save as" fails a Word temporary file is
left in the same directory.

Simple file sharing on the PC was turned on initially but while
troubleshooting this issue was turned off allowing more precise
permission configuration. Even with the least stringent permissions
turned on "allowing "Everyone" read/write access to the shared folder
the permission problem persists.

I've seen some posts but I didn't see any that had resolutions for the
issue other than copying the file first to the Mac's Desktop and
opening it and then saving it back to the PC shared folder. Thanks for
any input.

Hello,

First, thanks for the detailed email it really helps us identify the issue.

I sent this post to our support group and they would like to get some more
information on the error. Is it possible you can do the following?

[Instructions from my support contact]
Run a utility called "rasdiag" to get a network trace:

1. They can just run 'rasdiag.exe' from command line,
2. Wait for it to prompt them then reproduce the problem,
3. Once they get the error they can hit the space bar which will stop the
capture.
4. When you complete it, it will popup the window with a .rdg file in it,
5. have the customer send us the file.

(If for some reason they get a message rasdiag is not installed on the
machine they can install it from the support.cab on the XP CD, in
support\tools.)

You can send the ".rdg" file directly to me: (e-mail address removed)

Thank You

Hi,

Yes. I can contact the customer on Monday and hopefully have the .rdg
file emailed to you around midday. Thanks for your reply and
assistance.
