Save changes to document template?

I'm new to Word and Word for Mac. I notice when I create a document using a
template...then go to save the document, I also get a dialog box that asks
"Do you also want to save changes to the document template?" How can I turn
that off... It's too easy to hit YES and then my template is changed.

Hi Art:

You can't turn that OFF, but you can learn not to cause it :)

The prompt indicates that something you have done has caused an unsaved
change to the template. Don't do that, and you won't get the prompt :)

If you use the Finder to set the Template to be "Read Only" (or, on a Mac,
mark it as "Stationery" then you will not be able to save the changes to the
template.

That is not necessarily "better". If it can't save to the template, Word
will present you with a copy of the template and ask where you want to save
it. You would need to cancel out to dismiss the copy.

What's causing the changes? The user often won't know. It may be that you
have updated a style, and clicked "Add to template". It may be that you
have stored a new AutoText or AutoCorrect. It may be that you have recorded
a macro. It may simply be that the template contains a field that has
updated (for example, a date field or a table of contents).

Hope this helps

Wow! I'm perplexed. When I've used my (first) template, all I've been
changing is the text in the body. No changes to styles or page layout.
Hmmm...Thanks. Art

Hi Art:

Just check for me that your Normal template is NOT read-only to yourself
(open it using File>Open, add and remove a character, then save...)

Sometime if Normal gets copied from a CD, it may come in read-only, and it
then causes this problem. Set it so you can read and write it (or just
delete it: Word will create a new one it can write to...).

Cheers
