save changes to normal.dot problem

J

john

I am using word2000 with XP. When exiting Word, I keep
getting a message that changes have been made to the
normal.dot template and do I want to save them. No matter
whether I say "no" or "yes," I get the message the next
time I use Word and want to exit. I have uninstalled Word
2000; I have done a repair reinstall of Word2000; neither
gets rid of the faulty message. Any suggestions?

John,

This message is presented to users that have the warning
option selected in options, and to inform you that you
have indeed made changes to the normal template. It's
there to let you know just in case one somehow made
changes and didn't want to do so. It's best practice to
leave this warning enabled. It is set under...

Tools | Options | Save: Prompt to save Normal template.

Hi John,

I'm fairly certain I answered this question in one of your duplicate
posts in this newsgroup. :) I happen to have it handy so here is a
copy of what I posted:

More than likely you have a global template/add-in that modifies your
Normal.dot each time Word starts. If the changes are saved each time
then it can lead to the corruption of your Normal.dot and you'll be
back here asking why Word won't start. <grin>

If Word came installed as part of Works Suite then more than likely
the culprit is the "Microsoft Works Suite Add-in for Word" Take a look
in your Control Panel and if you find the add-in uninstall it as it is
known to cause several problems. Note you are not uninstalling Word or
Works, just an add-in that provides additional functionality to Word.

If it isn't the Works Suite add-in go to Tools/Templates and Add-Ins
and see if there are any global templates or add-ins listed. If so
they are located in one of your Startup folders. The location of the
Word\Startup folder can be found under Tools/Options/File Locations
and the Office\Startup folder can be found in the Office installation
path..

Move each file you find out of the folder and start/exit Word until
you find the offending add-in.

In the future it is best to check your original post for replies
rather than continuing to repost your question. These groups are
supported by volunteers so it may take a day or so before someone
provides an answer. Not to mention duplicate posts add to the overall
traffic of the newsgroup and these groups are already pretty busy! :)

Please post all follow-up questions to the newsgroup. Requests for
assistance by email can not be acknowledged.
