save entire workbook to a single PDF file

I

iMacsoft

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: intel

as discussed in the previous post

I realize that in the print dialogue page, if i choose "entire workbook", then the PDF file always only contains the last sheet.
if I preview, then all the sheets will be generated into separate files with different file names.
I guess when Excel 2008 converts the entire workbook to a single PDF file, it still generates each sheet into separate files, then the last file will overwrite the previous files.
this is a bug needed to be fixed.

Although it might be considered a "bug" it isn't Excel's bug because Excel
doesn't create the PDF - nor does Excel print *anything*. The fault lies in
the PDF generator. All Excel does is relay your request to have a PDF (or
any other format) printed. Have a look on VersionTracker.com for utilities
that enable combining the separate files into a single PDF file - they're
commonly referred to as "stitchers". Most are freeware/shareware.

I agree with you that this is a bug and given the fact that the preview
button, part of Excel 2008, without (seemingly) calling any external
application other than standard Mac OS X functions, this should be fixed by
Microsoft.

Suggesting that this is not Excel's bug seems like a poor attempt at
deflecting the blame and leaves people that paid good money for this software
feeling let down.

I do not want to use any freeware to fix this problem, I would,
respectfully, like to use my buggy "paid"ware. I am willing to put up with a
slow Excel, Buggy is definitely not fun.

Actually, your assumption about the "print button" being a "part of Excel
2008" is inaccurate:) That button & the dialog window in which it appears
is provided by OS X. Excel (or any other program) merely calls the service &
supplies a certain amount of the information inserted into specific areas.

Take into consideration that generating a PDF does produce a single file
comprising multiple pages if all the data is on the same sheet. It's only if
trying to print content from multiple sheets that separate PDFs are created.
That's because the PDF software isn't written to recognize the document
structure appropriately - it incorrectly interprets the end of sheet
"marker" as an end of document marker (short version). There's *nothing*
that can be done from within the originating file/application that can
change the way the PDF generator works. The content is simply handed off to
the PDF creator, which then does what it's written to do with the data.

Consider further that a PDF creator is merely a sophisticated printer driver
which "prints" to a file rather than to some physical media. Your physical
printer doesn't have any problem printing content from a multi-sheet
workbook, does it? That's because *its* driver has been coded to interpret
the breaks effectively.

Blame whomever you want, but it won't change the facts:)
