Hi Jack,

Which version of Word? I don't know of any command that
explicitly "saves an envelope": what steps are you
following?

If what you want is to create envelopes, have you tried
setting the page size of a new document to an envelope
size?

Cindy, I'm running Word 2002 SP2+. To save the envelope,
I click the Add to Document button on the Tools | Letters
and Mailings | Envelopes and Labels | Envelopes dialog.
Then I click File | Save | MollyEnv.doc . When I open
that saved file, the envelope appears at the top of the
document followed by a blank 8½ x 11 page.

I do set the File | Page Setup | Paper | Paper size to
No. 10 Envelope, but thanks for the reminder.

Cindy, thanks for your time to help me. I've decided to
leave my saved document "as is" and get back to working
on projects where I can better justify spending my time.
Thanks again. Jack Mills

Hi Jack,

Just in case you're still around, for clarification...

When you use the command you mention to create an envelope,
it does exactly as the buttons states, and adds the envelope
*to the document*. So what you're seeing is what Word is
supposed to do, even though it may not be what you want or
hope :)

If all you want is an envelope, then I'd proceed as follows:

1. Start a new document
2. Go to File/Page Setup and choose the appropriate envelope
size
3. If you want a return address, type it in at the top left
4. Make sure the cursor is positioned in the top line, then
type into the STYLES box on the Formatting toolbar: Envelope
Address

This will insert a FRAME at the position on the envelope as
defined in this style's definition. You type the delivery
address into this frame.

Now, if you'd like to re-use this envelope frequently,
before you type in a delivery address:
1. Go to File/Save As, choose Word Template *.dot as the
file type and save it
2. Close it
3. use File/New, look for the link to templates on your
computer, find your new envelope template and choose it
(from this point on, it will be listed in the New Documents
task pane, so that you can get to it more quickly)

This will create a new document (envelope) from your
template. Type in the delivery address (click where the
frame should be to put the focus there), print it, then save
or discard.

Thanks, Cindy. I'll set up that envelope .dot and use it
in the future. Great idea. Jack Mills

To add to what Cindy has said:

1. You'll probably need to change the default margins.

2. You can use the Envelope Return style for the return address. If you set
Envelope Address as the "Style for following paragraph," you'll get the
address automatically when you press Enter.

3. For more information on setting up envelope templates, see
