save file locks up and task manager says program not responding

save as option does not respond i can only save a new document to desktop. i
can't save changes to existing documents in folders or other groups other
than desktop. when i end task i send the error message but i don't get any
suggestions on a fix. i can't save to any other drivers like cd or memory
stick.
