How can i disable the automatic saving of records when a form is exited and
make it prompt for a save instead.

You must use the BeforeUpdate event of the *form* to trap the saving of the
new record. There are so many ways a record can be saved, e.g. closing the
form, tabbing past the last control, applying a filter or sort or
reassigning recordsource, Shift+Enter, closing Access, Save Record from the
Records menu, etc, etc.
