Save message after printing document in Word 2003

Receiving "Do you want to save changes?" message box ONLY when the document
is printed. Tried all the remedies listed from other users from this group,
including tools > options > print > update fields & tools > options > save >
smart tags (turning off).

The environment: 1.DOC was created prior to WORD 2003. This doc has an
custom .dot template attached that which was also created prior to WORD 2003.
When I open and print the 1.doc, receive the above message.

Created a new 2.doc in WORD 2003, cut and pasted from the above 1.doc,
attached the same custom .dot template from above that was created prior to
WORD 2003. When I open and print the 2.doc, I DO NOT receive the above
message.

Obsevation: when printing the 1.doc, a message box pops-up "Printing", "now
printing page # of 1.doc"
when printing the 2.doc there is only a status bar on the bottom status line
only.

I hope this provides enough info. Hopefully, will not have to hear "you will
have to live with this" answer as I have over 1200 .docs that will need to be
cut and pasted.

Did you ever say YES to the message?

Printing might trigger a field update (say, a DATE field).

(You can try this on a copy of both 1.doc and it's template ...).

Yes. That still does not work. Found a workaround on google. I intercept the
Print events. Check the ActiveDocument.Save status before print and set it
back after the print. This seems to be a good workaround, but still do not
know the cause.

OK, that certainly works. I can't really say why the older document
reports the change and the newer doesn't.

A possible difference between these two documents could be found either
in Tools | Options | Print. A very probable difference will be found in
Tools | Options | Compatibility.
