Save Mulitple Project files into the Server

H

Hadi

Hello Experts,

I apologize if this question has been already addressed but I was not
succssful in finding answers. I have over 300 mpp files saved on a Shared
Drive somewhere on our servers. Finally, our manager agreed to post all of
them on the server so we can start using PWA and server capabilities. my
question is how do I save these mpp files on the server (we're using 2003) in
a batch fashion. is there a utility out there for this, or do i have to use a
macro

regards,

Hadi

There is no automated way to bring over 300 MPP files into the Project
Server 2003 system as a batch. You could certainly write a macro to do
this, but I would not recommend it. Instead, now would be a good time to
clean up each of these projects to make sure they conform to the standards
you have set for enterprise projects in Project Server. It would also be a
huge time saver if your PMs would make sure that the names of their
resources in each MPP file match EXACTLY with the names of those resources
in the Enterprise Resource Pool. If they don't, then the PMs should edit
the names of their resources in the MPP projects to correspond exactly.
Then I would recommend your PMs manually import each project individually
using the Import Project Wizard (Tools - Enterprise Options - Import Project
to Enterprise). The first page of the Wizard is the most important, which
will allow the PM to match local resources in the MPP file with enterprise
resources in the Enterprise Resource Pool. If the resource names match
exactly, the Wizard will automatically match the resources. Using the
Import Project Wizard, your PMs will need to import each project
individually, as there is no way to mass import a batch of projects. Hope
this helps.

Hadi,

you will actually need to import that files into project server. Once in
Project server, the proejcts will not be files anymore, but stored in the
Project Server database.

You can import that Projects using MS Project Professional. Go to TOOLS >
Enterprise Options > Import project to Enterprise....

This will open a wizard that will help you import the projects.
Hope this helps

Dale,

One question, what is the difference between using the Import method you
described below and simply opening the schedules, Save As and save the
schedule to the Server. Also, when you do that MS Project recognizes any
resources with the same names as the ones on the Server.

thanks,

Hadi

Using the Import Wizard allows your PMs to confirm that their project
conforms to all of your Project Server 2003 standards for enterprise
resources, enterprise Task fields, and enterprise Calendars. Simply opening
the project and doing a File - Save As... bypasses the all of these checks.
I believe the most important feature in the Import Project Wizard is the
first dialog that allows the PM to match local resources to enterprise
resources. This way, the PMs can make sure that they don't leave any local
resources in their projects. My guess is that if your PMs do not use the
Import Project Wizard, and simply do a File - Open and File - Save As
operation, they will start to see Spooler errors whenver they publish their
projects. These Spooler errors are caused by local resources that were
never matched to the proper enterprise resources. Hope this helps.
