Save New Styles

Using Word 2002, I created a new style, based on Normal. Gave it a
unique name.
I adjusted all the formatting settings: font, paragraph, etc. Before
OK'ing out of the Styles dialog box, I checked Add to Template. I was
able to use the style in the current document and it gave me what I
needed.
The next time I started Word, I activated the Styles and Formatting
task pane, set it to Show All Styles at the bottom and my new style is
nowhere to be found.

What have I done wrong? I had expected it to be added to the Normal
template.

I don't guarantee that this is the problem, but "All Styles" doesn't really
mean *all* styles. To see *all* styles, choose Custom, then select "All
styles" (or in this case you could choose "User-defined styles") to see your
style. Check it in the list to be displayed and check the box for "Save
settings in template."

If your style is not shown, then it somehow *didn't* get saved in
Normal.dot. Were you prompted to save Normal.dot when you quit Word? If so,
did you say yes. If so, are you on a corporate network where possible
Normal.dot is read-only or refreshed at startup?

I suppoose this is one of those mysteries of life, but after reading
your reply, thanks for that, I decided that I had not done anything
wrong and tried again. Lo and behold; my new style was saved as part
of Normal.dot
