save problem when using Word or Publisher 2003

I'm using Office Pro 2003 on a PC with Windows XP pro. Often when I try
to save a file in either Publisher, Word or Powerpoint the program locks
up. This seems to happen particularly if I try to save to a destination
other than the default "My Documents" and navigate through the disk
structure. I then have to terminate the program and start again. Does
anyone have any ideas what is going on here.
This happens whenever I try to navigate through the file structure to
save elsewhere than the default "My Documents"
It also happens when I try to OPEN a file which is saved elsewhere.
Nothing is protected or locked, and I'm getting really fed up with this
as everytime the program locks solid necessitating a shutdown and
reboot, any PLEASE got a solution. Otherwise I may have to migrate to
another program.
