Save, Save As and Print are grayed out in Word 2003

This problem only occurs if Word is set as my email editor in Outlook 2003.
If I uncheck the radio button to use Word as my email editor and then restart
my PC, then Save, Save As and Print are available from the Word File menu and
the Save and Print icons are also functional. I would like to use Word as my
email editor and still be able to save and print documents. My company
helpdesk has already tried reinstalling MS Office 2003 and that did not solve
the problem.

Reinstall is nearly always a waste of time. Instead, open any of the Office
apps and run Detect and Repair from under the Help Menu.

I tried runing Detect and Repair. I ran it once with the radio button for
using Word as the email editor unchecked and then checked the button but the
problem recurred. I then ran Detect and Repair again with the same result.
I am back to using Outlook without Word as the email editor. Thanks for the
suggestion - too bad it didn't work.

Then it is most likely a third party incompatible add-in that is causing the
problem.

To test for this, close Outlook and Word and then look in Task Manager to
make certain that winword.exe is not running. If it is, right-click on it
and stop it.

Then from the Run command (Winkey+R) type in

winword /a

and press enter. Word will open in Safe Mode. Open a document and see if the
Save/SaveAs/Print commands are active. Minimise Word to the Taskbar.

Open Outlook. Open either a new blank email or reply to an existing email to
force Word to come up. Now maximise the document from the Taskbar to see if
the commands are still working.

If they are still not working, Close everything again and repeat the whole
procedure EXCEPT don't start Word in Safe Mode but start Outlook in Safe
Mode. Do the commands still work?

Terry,

I followed you directions and ran word in safe mode and all the commands
were active. I reset Outlook to use Word as my email editor and everythings
seems to be working OK. They are still working correctly after a restart. I
don't understand why it works but thanks for solving the problem

I didn't anticipate that it would fix the problem! It was for diagnostics.
However, starting using the /a switch does do more than just run in Safe
Mode - it must have reset something in the registry.
