Save & Save As Grayed Out

I'm using Word 2000 and have been for a long time, but just the other day I
went to save a document and the Save and Save As in the drop down File menu
was grayed out and I couldn't save it. I have received and installed all of
the latest updates and restarted my computer; nothing works. Does anyone
know how to correct this?
