save vs. publish

It was my understanding that saving a project plan simply stores it in
the database and if you want it to display in the PWA, you have to
"publish".

Well, I am certain I JUST saved a plan and it now shows up in the PWA
prior to "publish". I don't have project setup to automatically
publish on a save either.

Is it because I am logging on as an administrator? Is there something
about the administrator account that displays the plan in PWA prior to
"publishing"?

Thanks,
Andy

In Project Server 2002, saving a project caused it to show up partially in
PWA in the Project Center and detailed Project views, and you still needed
to formally publish the project. In Mircosoft Project 2003, however, saving
a project also publishes the project at the time you close the project file.
When you close the project file, the complete project information shows up
in the Project Center and detailed Project views.

I believe that Microsoft changed the default behavior of the system so that
the Project tables do not get "out of synch" with the Web tables in the
Project Server database. Please note, however, that saving a project DOES
NOT publish the assignments, however, so this must still be done manually
using Collaborate - Publish - New and Changed Assignments. Hope this helps.

Followup. Say you build a plan and assign Enterprise resources. As
an option, can you save the plan to an *.mpp on your local drive until
you decide to put it out on the PWA? Will saving to your local drive
change those enterpise resources to "local"?

If you DID save it in the database, how could you temporarily control
who sees it in the PWA until "ready"? I figure this has something to
do with security in the PWA, but please be specific.

Thanks,
Andy

Yes, you could save the project as an .mpp file temporarily. When you are
ready to save it in the Project Server database, you must import the project
using the Import Projects Wizard (Tools - Enterprise Options - Import
Project to Enterprise). No, saving the project as an .mpp file won't
convert the enterprise resources to local resources.

I do not have the time to give you every step needed to hide a project in
the Project Server database. Instead, refer to the following link for an
example of how to control access to archived projects:

http://www.projectserverexperts.com/Shared Documents/ArchiveCompletedProjects.htm

From that FAQ, you can probably deduce how to hide planned projects. Hope
this helps.
