Save vs Publish

Alexandre

hello,
somebody please explain the difference between File, Save and Collaborate,
Publish in MS Project 2003 Pro.
MS Project gives "published" extension to a saved project and says it will
first save a project when I want to directly publish it.
Where is the difference?
Thank you in advance

When you do a File, Save to a "published" project, it updates the project
schedule on the server but does not update Task Assignments as seen by task
owners. "Publishing" task assignment changes pushes changes to the schedule
out to the timesheets.

Hope that helps!

In addition to Christina's excellent answer, here's more "food for thought"
for you:

1. When you save a project initially in the Project Server database, the
system saves your project and adds the file extension ".published" to the
name of the project. If you navigate to the Project Center page without
closing your project, you cannot see the project there since you have not
published it.

2. When you close the project after you initially save it, the systm does a
"background" publish of your project. It publishes your project using
Collaborate - Publish - Project Plan and it does this WITHOUT your
permission! If you navigate to the Project Center page after you close your
project, your project is now visible, even though you did not publish it.

3. If you save a new enterprise project initially, and then publish it
right away using Collaborate - Publish - Project Plan or Collaborate -
Publish - All Information, the information is immediately visible in the
Project Center page.

4. When you publish the assignements in the project using Collaborate -
Publish - New and Changed Assignments, the tasks assignments are "pushed" to
each team member's timesheet in PWA.

Hope this helps.
