Why are my saved documents now unreadable when I want to open and edit them?

If you've come here via discussions.msft.com it's about 99.5% certain you're
on a PC using Windows. You've landed in a discussion group for users of Mac
versions of Word (not your fault: it's a charming foible of MS's
"discussions" web interface). Mac versions differ variously from PC
versions. Although several people here use both PCs and Macs, it's likely
that more people in a PC group have experienced your specific problem.
Here's where all the groups are listed:

But even they are unlikely to give you a solution unless you give your
version of Word and a *far* more detailed description of exactly what you
are doing. From here it's hard to see over your shoulder. ;-)

Chances are, you are using an old version of Word, and you have "Recovered"
a document at some stage.

In the old versions of Word, the "Recover text from any document" setting
used to stick in the File>Open dialog. And if it did, that's the result.

Otherwise: Unless you give us enough information, we cannot answer the
problem. Given that there are at least 20 versions of Word in use, across
some six major operating systems, unless you tell us what you are using, you
are just making the game too hard, we can't play...
