Saved documents have blank icons

I'm using Word 2008 for Mac. When I save a new document or template in Word 2004 format, if I don't add the .doc file extension the icon for the document is blank, just plain white. It opens without a problem. If I add the .doc or if I save in Word 2008 format (without the extension) the icon is correct. Is this a bug or something I can fix without constantly removing the extension after I've saved.

Thanks

Kathy

Why do you find the extensions objectionable? It's actually far better to
use them in OS X - especially if you ever have reason to send attachments to
PC users. To avoid having to type them simply check the box in the Save As
dialog to Append File Extension. The appropriate extension will be appended
automatically based on the format you choose to save in.

The system uses the extension to determine which icon to display. This is
Unix, we're using now, remember? :)
