saved documents not compatible

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)

I have saved my word documents in a flashdrive. When wanting to open this in a Word based operating system it is not compatible - latest word programme? When doing a compatibility report it indicates that word cannot identify the text language.
How must I save the work on my Apple Mac for use on a different operating system to avoid this?

This is urgent and crucial as I have saved 3 days work on an Apple and need this on at my work!

If you're attempting to open the file directly from the flash "drive"
*don't* - copy or move the file to your PC's HD.

Word 2007 shouldn't have a problem opening files created by Word 2008, but
if there is a problem you'll need to be more exact about the wording of any
error messages. Also include further clarification of what Language your
version of 2008 is, as well as any additional insight on special language
fonts used, language formatting, etc.
