saved files wont open from desktop

Hi all,
Can any1 help me please, when I save a document in word 2007 to my desktop
or a folder on my desktop, I then try to open them and they wont open and
word crashes, so I have I then have to launch word and try to open them from
in word 2007. Can any1 asssist me with what the problem is please so I can
open the files as normal
