Saved Style - Template Trashed

S

Steve Stover

Windows 2k, Word 2k SP1. I started working on the third
of 3 documents based on SRC Template.dot. Heading 3 had
an extra tab in the wrong place, so I saved the change to
the template. Now most of the heading styles are trashed -
no numbering sequence for starters. I can't attach and
auto update from any SRC Template (4) that does any
differently. But if I Format\Theme\Style Gallery\SRC
Template the styles seem to get fixed. They just don't
stay that way. All the 3 documents are affected. Copying
styles from one template to another doesn't seem to help.

Related Q: I have 2 styles with same name and different
formatting (like Header 3). No idea where the second style
format came from. How can I tell where the different
styles are coming from, and only use one, from the
template?

Any way I can do a newsgroup or Microsoft Support search
on specific Word 2k Style/Format problems?

Thanks for *any* help,
Steve

Answering your last question about the newsgroups:

Archives of the various newsgroups can be found at
http://groups.google.com/advanced_group_search
To restrict your search to only the Word newsgroups put:

microsoft.public.word.*

in the box for "newsgroup"

To restrict it to a single group (i.e. newsusers) put

microsoft.public.word.newusers

in the box for "newsgroup"

I would recommend in the future when you have three questions you put
them in separate posts, each with its own subject.

On your second question (two styles, same name)...

I suspect that you tried to apply a paragraph style to selected text
that was not a complete paragraph. Word may have created a character style
and given it the same name to accomplish what it thought you were trying to
do. If you go into the Format => Styles dialog and after selecting the
style, click on the Modify button it will tell you which kind of style it
is. I'm assuming when you are talking about two styles with the same name
you mean that they are in the same document.

As for your first question (template trashed) your problem almost
certainly relates to using Word's automatic numbering which is _very_
touchy. You may want to post that question again in the numbering newsgroup
if you don't get an answer here within the next few days. In the meantime,
here is some light reading:

Thanks Charles, I really appreciate the info! I did need
some light reading after the holidays! Next time I'll
separate all questions. Hopefully won't be many times,
cause I'm mainly a programmer. I did start wondering this
weekend if it was a numbering problem instead of a style
problem.

Thanks again!
Steve

You are welcome. BTW, you can run into the same kind of problems with
bullets. Never use the buttons on the toolbars for bullets or numbering in
any kind of serious (subject to editing/revision) document or template.
