Saves as Text Edit

Version: 2004 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Processor: Intel I have a Word document that has somehow been saved as a Text Edit document, even though under "Get Info" it is listed as a Word file. The document seems only to open if I drag its icon over the Text Edit icon in the Dock; I am not able to open it in Word. If I open it in Text Edit, copy the text into a Word file, and save it as such, the same thing happens. How can I get the text into a working Word file?!

Hello,

I have a Word document that has somehow been saved as a Text Edit document,
even though under "Get Info" it is listed as a Word file. The document seems
only to open if I drag its icon over the Text Edit icon in the Dock; I am not
able to open it in Word. If I open it in Text Edit, copy the text into a Word
file, and save it as such, the same thing happens. How can I get the text
into a working Word file?!

You'll need to change the file type association for Word files,
to make sure that they are indeed opened in Word.

In Finder, select any Word file, type Command+I to get the file's
info, and in the Application dropdown box, make sure that
Word is selected. There should be a button below that which
says "Change All" or something like that. Click this to change
the file type association for all .doc files.

You can also open the file from within Word using the File - Open
command - this should open it directly in Word, if all else fails.

Hope this helps you.

If it will open in TextEdit, Word can open it as well. You'll have to use
the File> Open command & perhaps change the Enable: setting to RTF or Text
Files in order for the file name to appear as available rather than dimmed.
